			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The <a href="http://www.forceandmotion.org/scholarships/force-and-motion">Force and Motion Academic Scholarship</a>, made possible by funds from <a href="http://www.amti.biz/">AMTI</a>, is awarded annually to assist promising graduate students in fields related to multi-axis force measurement and testing.</p>
<p>During the 2011-2012 academic year, the Foundation will award $10,000 scholarships to help defray the qualified higher education expenses of two promising graduate students. Scholarships will be offered on a competitive basis; applications will be judged by the Force and Motion Foundation’s review board based on quality, scientific contribution, and innovation.</p>
<p>The application deadline is February 1, 2012.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>David Shiffman</strong> is a Ph.D. student in UM&#8217;s Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy. He&#8217;s been named as a finalist in the 2011 blogging scholarship for his online conservation advocacy and science education. If he wins, David will be awarded with $10,000 to support his shark conservation research.</p>
<p>The final decision comes down to votes&#8211;he&#8217;s currently winning, but his lead is disappearing quickly!</p>

<p>With his award, David will be able to further is dissertation work, which focuses on the ecological importance of sharks to coral reef ecosystems. It will be used to support his lab&#8217;s citizen science program, which has taken over 1,000 high school students and teachers into the field to learn about sharks and participate in an active research program. Additionally, David plans to adopt a satellite tagged shark in the name of the readers of Southern Fried Science, which will be followed on Google Earth.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Intensive Language Institute will once again offer a free, non-credit English course for International Teaching Assistants (ITAs), especially for those who have not yet met the <a href="http://www6.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Main/0,1770,29045-1;39236-2,00.html">spoken English proficiency requirements</a>.</p>
<p>This course is an opportunity for graduate ITAs to get more practice with the presentation and discourse skills that are vital to success in the classroom or lab, in addition to English pronunciation, fluency, and preparation for the SPEAK test.</p>
<p>This course is open to qualifying ITAs who have contact with undergraduate students and who wish to improve their spoken English skills in order to better perform in a position of classroom or lab instruction. The course has been designed for those who have not achieved a score of 55 on the SPEAK test and who have not passed the subsequent teaching presentation test.</p>
<p>The free course will meet on <strong>Tuesdays </strong>and<strong> Thursdays</strong> from<strong> September 6 </strong>through<strong> November  10 </strong>at<strong> 3:30 to 5 p.m. </strong>in<strong> Allen Hall. </strong></p>

<p><strong>WHY: </strong>This year, <a href="http://www.peacecorps.gov/index.cfm?shell=about.fiftieth">the Peace Corps commemorates 50 years</a> of promoting peace and friendship around the world. In conjunction with the agency&#8217;s mission and legacy of service, they aim to honor the past, demonstrate their effectiveness, and inspire the next generation of volunteers through education and engagement.</p>
<p>A private, research university with more than 15,000 students from around the world, the University of Miami is one of the top producers of Peace Corps volunteers in the USA.  UM is currently ranked #21 among all medium size schools in the number of volunteers they produce.  There are 23 UM alumni currently serving in the Peace Corps.  Almost 400 UM Alumni have served in the Peace Corps.</p>
