The Force and Motion Academic Scholarship – Deadline Feb. 1, 2012

The Force and Motion Academic Scholarship, made possible by funds from AMTI, is awarded annually to assist promising graduate students in fields related to multi-axis force measurement and testing.

During the 2011-2012 academic year, the Foundation will award $10,000 scholarships to help defray the qualified higher education expenses of two promising graduate students. Scholarships will be offered on a competitive basis; applications will be judged by the Force and Motion Foundation’s review board based on quality, scientific contribution, and innovation.

The application deadline is February 1, 2012.

Spring 2012 SPEAK Test for International T.A.s

The SPEAK test is required to demonstrate ability in spoken English for prospective international teaching assistants. The test will be administered on Tuesday, January 10 at 6 p.m. in Allen Hall, room 102.

A photo I.D. (CaneCard or Passport) is required for all test takers. Please call Ms. Maki Burgess in the Intensive Language Institute office at (305) 284-4727 to reserve your place. You can also e-mail the center at alcstudies@miami.edu.

All students who are interested in taking the SPEAK test must be registered by 5 p.m. on Friday, January 6.

Ph.D. Student David Shiffman Needs Your Help

David Shiffman is a Ph.D. student in UM’s Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy. He’s been named as a finalist in the 2011 blogging scholarship for his online conservation advocacy and science education. If he wins, David will be awarded with $10,000 to support his shark conservation research.

The final decision comes down to votes–he’s currently winning, but his lead is disappearing quickly!

With his award, David will be able to further is dissertation work, which focuses on the ecological importance of sharks to coral reef ecosystems. It will be used to support his lab’s citizen science program, which has taken over 1,000 high school students and teachers into the field to learn about sharks and participate in an active research program. Additionally, David plans to adopt a satellite tagged shark in the name of the readers of Southern Fried Science, which will be followed on Google Earth.

Teaching is a key part of faculty responsibilities. But how does one demonstrate teaching proficiencies and strengths to future employers? This discussion will review why teaching portfolios are important for an academic career, and provide resources for developing traditional and electronic teaching portfolios. The workshop will center on the development of a teaching philosophy, and other elements of the teaching portfolio that highlight your teaching achievements and your understanding of the academic job search.

Free Intensive Language Institute Course for International TAs

The Intensive Language Institute will once again offer a free, non-credit English course for International Teaching Assistants (ITAs), especially for those who have not yet met the spoken English proficiency requirements.

This course is an opportunity for graduate ITAs to get more practice with the presentation and discourse skills that are vital to success in the classroom or lab, in addition to English pronunciation, fluency, and preparation for the SPEAK test.

This course is open to qualifying ITAs who have contact with undergraduate students and who wish to improve their spoken English skills in order to better perform in a position of classroom or lab instruction. The course has been designed for those who have not achieved a score of 55 on the SPEAK test and who have not passed the subsequent teaching presentation test.

The free course will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from September 6 through November 10 at 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Allen Hall.

Peace Corps’ “Making a Difference” Job Fair at UM

The career fair will feature organizations offering careers in public service, humanitarian aid and international development.

More than 20 employers including Federal and State agencies such as the FBI, the State Department, the IRS, Everglades National Park, and the Department of Corrections will be looking for employees as part of the “Making a Difference” Career Fair. Also participating will be non-profit organizations Food for the Poor and Educate Tomorrow.

A panel will follow the career fair – “Honoring Our Past, Inspiring Future Generations.” Esteemed panelists include Peace Corps Director Aaron S. Williams, University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala, Knight Foundation President Alberto Ibargüen, and Educate Tomorrow Founder Virginia Emmons McNaught.

WHERE: University of Miami BankUnited Center’s Fieldhouse, 1245 Dauer Drive Coral Gables, Florida.

WHY: This year, the Peace Corps commemorates 50 years of promoting peace and friendship around the world. In conjunction with the agency’s mission and legacy of service, they aim to honor the past, demonstrate their effectiveness, and inspire the next generation of volunteers through education and engagement.

A private, research university with more than 15,000 students from around the world, the University of Miami is one of the top producers of Peace Corps volunteers in the USA. UM is currently ranked #21 among all medium size schools in the number of volunteers they produce. There are 23 UM alumni currently serving in the Peace Corps.
