Creative Writing Program’s USpeak Back-to-School Bash

The Creative Writing Department at the University of Miami has teamed with Books & Books in Coral Gables to kick off this year’s 2011-2012 USpeak season.

Poet John Murillo, author of “Up Jump the Boogie” and visiting assistant professor at UM, will emcee a night of open mic readings, flamenco dancing, and a must-see reading by this year’s Literary Death Match winners—the Foryoucansee spoken word team who produced the book Hialeah Haikus.

The Miami New Times called Hialeah Haikus “a collection of provocative, insightful (and hilarious) haikus that provide an astonishing, hallucinatory experience—a journey into the deep dark “brown-ness” of one of America’s most diverse communities: Hialeah, Florida.”

DATE: Friday, August 26, 2011
TIME: 9 p.m.
LOCATION: Books & Books, 265 Aragon Avenue, Coral Gables

The event will include an open mic session when audience members are invited to share a page of their writing with USpeak’s ever-growing, always appreciative audience.

USpeak events are free, open to the public, and are sponsored, in part, by the University of Miami’s Department of English, Creative Writing Program, and Auxiliary Services, and Books & Books.

FIU/UM Exchange Program for Fall 2011 – Apply by Fri., Aug. 12

FIU and UM doctoral students (Ph.D. and Ed.D.) and students in the Latin American and Caribbean Center’s (LACC) master’s programs have the opportunity to complete up to six credits at FIU as members of an exchange program between FIU and UM. The program gives graduate students a larger selection of courses to choose from and allows students at UM and FIU to take advantage of the broad educational and research opportunities at both institutions.

All students who are fully admitted into a doctoral program or LACC master’s program and who are in good academic standing may participate in this program. Students can choose from any course at FIU provided the course is not already offered at UM, is not a limited access course, and/or does not have additional fees (i.e., many online courses).

The FIU/UM Ph.D. Program is a true intellectual exchange between FIU and the UM and a unique academic opportunity for all students who decide to participate!

2011 NSF Summer Research for Undergraduates a Success

2011 Summer REU students with Dr. Bedeau (far left) and graduate student mentors.

The Graduate School recently hosted nine students for the National Science Foundation-funded Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates. The students were invited to UM for ten weeks and were paired with UM faculty to work on various research initiatives in the social, behavioral, and economic sciences. Students, who came from as far as the University of Buffalo, had the opportunity to test drive graduate school by working in labs alongside UM graduate students, analyze data, and present their work at a conference-style presentation at the end of the ten weeks.

The Summer 2011 program cycle marked the sixth year of the NSF’s grant to fund this research experience. A great majority of the students who have come through the Graduate School’s summer research program have went on to attend graduate school and enjoy academic success.

“These students were dynamic. Their oral presentations and research posters addressed topics in environmental preservation, multicultural training for counseling psychologists, PTSD in Haiti, and other national and international issues. With the support of UM faculty, staff, and graduate students, these undergraduates now have a solid introduction to research and are better prepared to apply and do well in graduate school,” remarked Dr. Koren A. Bedeau, assistant dean of the Graduate School. “It’s always a pleasure to receive news of their progress after they leave UM.”
